Cherokee County schools are lucky to have two different summer camp programs for youth across the county to attend. The 21st Century After School Program Summer Camp is held at two locations, Andrews Elementary and Murphy Elementary. The regular Cherokee County After School Program at Murphy Elementary host a summer camp open to any student that is enrolled in a Cherokee County School grades Pre K – 5th. Cherokee County 4-H partnered with both of the after school care programs this summer to provide some fun experiences for both groups.

The Cherokee County Schools After School program participated in the N.C. Cooperative Extension program Steps to Health Kids Club this summer taught by 4-H Extension Agent, Shannon Coleman. During Kids Club the student learned about the different food groups and participated in active play, which is basically exercise hidden in a fun game that got the students moving and exercising in a fun manner.

Youth were given water bottles to encourage drinking water and jump ropes to encourage exercise at home. Parents received information sheets each week, which ranged from the different My Plate food groups to cutting back on screen time at home. These handouts often included great healthy recipes and ways families could include nutritional foods in their daily lives.

Cherokee County 4-H has had a partnership with the Cherokee County Schools 21st Century Learning Centers After School Program for several years. We have provided 4-H curriculum training to their site directors as well as worked in their summer camps to provide 4-H curriculum to the youth during the summer.

This summer 4-H worked with the youth on cooking skills with recipes from the 4-H Cooking 101-401 curriculum. The students would be provided with a different recipe each week as well as some kitchen tips from food safety, knife safety, how to store eggs, how to measure, doubling recipes, and much more. Older youth were allowed to help with food prep whenever possible and even got to practice proper knife handling skills. Each week there was a different recipe and kitchen safety or food safety topic that was presented. Students at Murphy and Andrews 21st Century Learning Centers After School Summer Program participated, ranging in age from kindergarten to 7th grade.
