Advisory Leadership Council Visits Ashe County

— Written By N.C. Cooperative Extension

Ashe County October 12-14, 2010. We were welcomed warmly to the county by County Extension Director Carolyn Shepherd and all of her staff. We met in their Extension Center on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Carolyn and her staff arranged tours for the Advisory Council that included:

A tour of State Advisory Council member Ron Joyner’s Big Horse Creek Farm. After arriving at Ron’s place (which was a story within itself :)) we were treated to a tour that showed off Ron’s heirloom apple orchard and his 75 acre farm which they have put in a Conservation easement for the future generations to enjoy.

We left there and traveled to Mountain View Elementary School where we were shown a 4-H Tutoring Program. The 4-H afterschool program is very active in Ashe County.

We finished up the tour at the Upper Mountain Research Station where they are growing fresh strawberries and raspberries 10 months out of the year. They were delicious!

During the meeting we also heard Administrative updates from Dr. Joe Zublena, Interim Director and Director of County Operations for the NCCES and from Dr. M. Ray McKinnie, Associate Dean and Administrator, the Cooperative Extension Program, NCA&T University.
