Sylvia spent her school years in Chatham County, her early career in Guilford County and her final years of employment in Lee County. Her education includes a B.S. degree in Business from East Carolina University and a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from UNC-G. Sylvia’s avid support of North Carolina Cooperative Extension began in 1997 shortly after her retirement from the NC Public schools. She joined the Lee County Extension Community Association, and it took only a couple of years for her to recognize the large number of citizens impacted by the Cooperative Extension programs in the areas of education and service. She became a supportive volunteer and advocate for Extension.
Her service in numerous leadership roles including the president of Lemon Springs ECA, Lee County council president and secretary, the Community Outreach Coordinator for both South Central District and the State Association, the North Carolina Extension Community Association Budget Coordinator, member of the State Strategic Planning Committee, and currently as the State Association’s Parliamentarian has helped Sylvia grow in her understanding of how NC Cooperative Extension seeks to improve the lives of citizens across the state. She has been a member of the Extension Advisory Council in Lee County since 2000 and co-chaired the Council for two years.
Sylvia’s other activities in her community have involved serving on the Advisory Council of the Tool & Die Department of Central Carolina Community College, Treasurer of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church, Legislative Chairperson of the Lee County Retired Personnel and participant in the Lee County Highway to Healing Program.
The North Carolina Cooperative Extension State Advisory Council would like to welcome Sylvia Churchwell to the Council. Sylvia has agreed to take on the big job of being our new LINK editor, succeeding former member Gabriel Soltren. We know she will do a great job and we look forward to working with her for many years to come!
